My wife and I spent a wonderful few days at Lazy Bowen near the end of May, 2019. It was about as close to perfect as any place we've ever stayed. It is exactly as advertised - the view from the back porch is tremendous, and the sound of the waves on the rock is the best music for reading or relaxing. From the back porch we saw an eagle, and as we were packing up to leave we saw a harbor seal by the dock below. The kitchen is modern and well-appointed, though we did no cooking at all (part of the appeal of leaving the kids and responsibilities behind!). Living room is comfortable and perfect for reading or just lazing around. Bowen island itself is really a wonderful, tranquil place. We ate at several restaurants, and particularly enjoyed the Bowen Island Pub (avocado smash and hippie pizza were outstanding). Recycling instructions are detailed, but manageable, and you leave with the desire that everyone was this conscientious about minimizing waste. Do pay attention to owner's instructions about driveway. It's not so much that the driveway is steep - it's the angle combined with the sharp turns. I am an adventurous driver, but I would not think of tackling that driveway with a 2-wheel or long-wheelbase vehicle. If we return to Bowen Island, this is where we'll want to stay. Thanks, Jan!

My husband and I stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway for a four-day weekend the weekend before my birthday and we absolutely loved it. The weather was perfect and the views from the property were gorgeous. We both work long hours, so we needed a really relaxing getaway with our little dog. We have a 4WD vehicle and saw the warnings about the drive down to the property, but it was not a big deal at all. The property had tons of space for two people (we didn't use the second bedroom at all) and we made good use of the kitchen to make delicious meals. I have multiple food allergies, but I was surprised to discover that Bowen Island has multiple restaurants that are able to accommodate my dietary needs. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and we hope to return again this summer or fall.

We just spent a fabulous 6 days at Lazy Bowen Hideway in mid-November but it felt like September. Well-equipped cottage was very comfortable. We enjoyed the patio seating & soaked up the fabulous panoramic sea views from dawn to dusk in the warm sunshine. One soaker day wasn’t a problem as we brought extra wood & enjoyed a real fire all day (view still good in the rain!). Only negative was the scary driveway. Small SUV recommended; our wheelbase a bit long made cornering an adventure!! But so worth the effort for that view!! Loved Bowen village vibe. Docs fish & chips highly recommended!!! Sadly sailed away today for the mainland & reality.....

The property is nicely tucked away on a private road and the view is breathtaking. My friend and I were on Bowen to have a quiet weekend of relaxation to celebrate her birthday and the Hideaway didn’t disappoint. The kitchen was fabulous to prepare meals in and we ate in the entire trip - no reason to leave except to take a little walk further down the road to the beach (seconds away). My wife and I stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway for a couple nights in April and had a fantastic time. The views and sounds of the ocean were incredible. The kitchen was super well-equipped and a pleasure to cook meals in. The bed was comfy and since the cabin is down at the end of a dead-end, 4WD road, there was no road or neighbour noise to deal with. For us, the 4wd access road was fun and added to the uniqueness, but for some it would definitely be a drawback. Just make sure you take a proper 4WD or AWD vehicle. The only real negative experience we had was a run-in with carpenter ants. A sign stated that they'd been spraying and we could encounter some dead ants, but we actually had a bunch of them get in through a couple new holes they must have made, which creeped me out a bunch. We managed to kill them all and put tape over the holes which kept them at bay for the rest of the trip. The note mentioned they were over one of the beds, too, which would have made it virtually impossible for me to sleep there since I get particularly freaked out by large insects, so luckily we were only needing the other bed. I would have appreciated a heads up about this, particularly if we were planning on using the other bedroom. Ants are bad enough during the day when you can see them...
Owner Response: Patrick, thank you for being our guests. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed the comfort of the Lazy Bowen Hideaway, the panoramic views, and the well-stocked kitchen. We love that you appreciated our AWD access road and how it adds to the charm and privacy of the Hideaway. We are sorry to learn that your stay was affected by the carpenter ants. During their awakening phase (typically a 2 week period sometime in March) our only defense is to vacuum them up when they appear. The ants are harmless to you and me but, if one is bugged by bugs, we understand this could be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the carpenter ants are a formidable foe and thrive in the Bowen rainforest. We see this as a part of island life. With regular professional maintenance several times during the year, we have successfully isolated them now to the right front corner of the living room. Your feedback has inspired us to write a blog post to inform our future Bowen visitors about nature's bugs, critters, and other island creatures. We hope it will be informative for our future guests. Thank you again for your feedback, and we look forward to hosting you again in the near future.

My husband and I were in need of a get away, and this property and location surpassed our expectations. The pictures don't do this property justice. 3 sides of the house had decks with amazing views and sitting areas to enjoy them. The interior was very cozy, elegant and homey; so beautifully appointed. We were happy whether we were inside or out. The island is a perfect getaway not far from Vancouver. But if you're looking for nightlife, this is not your place. However, if you truly want to enjoy the BC beauty, I can't recommend a better place. We chose to buy our groceries and cook. The kitchen looks to be newly renovated, and is a chefs dream. My husband loves to cook, and he had everything he needed. Not to mention the gorgeous view from the kitchen. We really liked Bowen Island, and it offered everything we needed. Jan, the owner was a pleasure to work with. No details were missed. I would definitley pay attention to her note about access to the property. You must have a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get down. I'd recommend renting one if you plan to come and go. At the very least, request the driver to haul your luggage. We're in good shape, but the road is approximately 100 Yards of steep gravel. Not easy when dragging up all your luggage (or strollers, wheelchairs). I cants stress that enough. I can't recommend this place enough. We're tough critics, and this place really did surpass our expectations. Thank you, Jan, for opening up your home to us. We'll be back! 🙌🏼

Wow! What a house! We enjoyed a lovely two days away from the mainland in this gorgeous home. The beach is a very short walk downhill and our kids could have tossed rocks in the ocean for hours - good rock-hounding! The house is beautifully appointed with a pretty view and has everything you need! We have stayed in many rentals and the toughest part is knowing what to bring and what to leave home. I assure you, all you need is the food you wish to cook. The kitchen has all the gadgets you might require, even seasonings. They provide kleenex, paper towels, TP, garbage bags, ALL the incidentals. You can find scissors and tape, foil and cling-wrap. There are books, games and movies (the player is VHS and DVD compatible - not Blu-ray) to watch and if you never want to leave you could be perfectly entertained on site. Not a complaint, but a point of note: While the owner does specify that it is a 5 minute walk if you don't have a vehicle capable of the drive, the walk is down a fairly steep mostly-dirt road. People with infants should anticipate using a carrier v. stroller and disabled or elderly visitors might have a difficult time negotiating the incline. It's good cardio though! Phew! We will definitely recommend to our friends and family in future.

The kitchen was very modern and had everything we could possibly need (and then some). The hideaway was very tastefully decorated; a balance of antique, natural and modern. It was apparent that Jan has a background in interior design! We thoroughly enjoyed minute of our vacation!
Owner Response: Katherine, thank you so much for your kind words. I am so happy that you enjoyed the Lazy Bowen Hideaway views and that Eagle that has staked his territory in our trees. It is always thrilling to see them fly so close to the house. I am an interior designer by profession, since 1978…….nearly 40 years now. Even though I am semi-retired from Jan Stevens Design the creativity is always there. When I inherited the Hideaway in 2004 it came with my Aunt Jerry’s 1970’s furnishings and yard sales finds. I loved working with the olive greens and gold…….then updating the colour palette and juxtaposing the old with the new……..I think the eclectic feel is “so cabin” and adds character to any décor. As we have added new sofas and chairs here and there we not only focused on classic style but comfort…..comfort is of utmost importance in your home away from home. The new open concept kitchen has really opened up the living space. The new appliances, filtered water, bright LED lighting and lots of counter space has been a much loved improvement. We love that a guest’s first step into the Hideaway leaves them in awe as they look through the new kitchen, overtop of the well-furnished living room and out to the gorgeous panoramic water views. We are so glad you appreciated the interiors and the exteriors……..love to have you return again, rain or shine. Your host, Jan.

My wife and I chose to honeymoon in Vancouver & Bowen specifically for the rain. We're from Southern California where the rain has been elusive for years. We spent four nights here in the hideaway and just did not want to leave. The view was spectacular. The cabin was warm and cozy. The VHS collection was great (especially if you're a Jane Austen fan). We especially enjoyed playing the Trivial Pursuit that was published 2 years after we were born. (That was a looong game!) We hiked to town daily (45 min. one-way) and took the shuttle back at night. For those who want to fly in and not take a car to visit the hideaway, it's totally doable if you're even partially familiar with transit. From YVR, buy an all-day transit pass (~$9.50CDN) and take the blue line to City Centre. Exit the underground station and make your way to street level. From there, walk to the bus stop at West Georgia & Seymour. The sign should show service on the 257 and 257 express to Horseshoe Bay. The 257 takes a beautiful route through West Vancouver but the express takes the highway and only takes half the time. The route terminates at the ferry. Take the ferry to Bowen Island (you pay for your trip over, but not back). Once docked, you walk off the ferry and follow the rest of the crowd. You'll come across a library and in front of that library is a bench and a bus stop for the Bowen Island shuttle. Use that all-day transit pass you purchased to jump on the C11 shuttle toward Eaglecliff and let the driver know that you need to get to Cleator Road. Once at Cleator, walk down the steep switchback (a hike on its own!) to get to the Hideaway.
Owner Response: Ramon, I am so glad that you loved the Lazy Bowen Hideaway and all the refreshing British Columbia rain. The Hideaway is a comfortable retreat even when it is raining outside: the cozy fireplace, the video library and the games. Plus throws and comfortable sofas and beds. So glad you had a memorable honeymoon and hope you will return to anniversary your romantic memories soon.

Owner Response: Thank you, Kaylee for taking your time to leave us a GREAT review. Glad to have your return. Yes never forget your swim suit especially with the beach and our swimming dock just being a minute down the trail. We agree, our driveway is a challenge and not for the faint of heart. Good to repeat that an All-Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel drive is required to drive down to the Hideaway. Or park at the top of the driveway and make the 5 minute walk down to the house........once there the VIEW IS BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks for the suggestion re the music hook ups. We will look into it.

My family and I stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway for two nights as part of a longer trip to the Pacific Northwest. It was everything that we'd hoped it would be! The rental is located in a peaceful area of the island and has a large deck overlooking the water. It is just a short walk down to a dock where my kids (ages 10 & 11) were able to do a little swimming. We enjoyed spending mornings on the deck sipping warm drinks and watching for bald eagles through the binoculars (we saw two!). The rental itself was very clean and comfortable. My favorite part was the kitchen! It was well-stocked and seemed newly-renovated. As others have noted it is a steep walk/drive from the main road to the property. We'd planned to get an SUV then at the last minute opted for a sedan and just parked on the road. This was not a problem at all. Transporting luggage took a little extra effort but not a big deal for a reasonably fit person. Big "thank you" to Jan for being a wonderful host! She gave us all of the information that we needed in a timely manner and provided everything we might want in the rental.
Owner Response: So glad that we could share our island paradise with Arizona natives. The contrast of the temperate rain forest to the desert is a real treat. You are exactly right, it is a newly renovated kitchen as of December 2014. The open concept, large granite counter dining and prep space plus the addition of the dishwasher is of great benefit to all of our guests. You should have seen the 38 year old kitchen...this is way better. The new decks just above the beach are ideal for enjoying coffee, or wine and letting the ships sail by. Loved having you and hope you will be our guests again soon. Glad to hear that the walk down to the house was easy for you.......it is a GREAT exercise opportunity and only reserved for healthy active guests like yourselves. Thank you so much for taking your time to leave us a review......our futures guests will certainly appreciate your feedback.

This home is a warm and charming place to stay on Bowen Island, BC. There are lovely touches everywhere you look as the owners have decorated it with things they love - and it shows. The beds are comfortable. The deck and inside views are amazing. The home sits on a slope with a challenging drive to reach it. Once you are there you are in for a treat. There is a beautiful new kitchen stocked with everything you may need. We had a great time exploring the island from top to bottom and loved every minute. Be aware that if there are people in the downstairs unit, you need to be quiet from 10 pm to 9 am. Also, there is a severe drought, so you are invited to be very conservative with water use.

Whether driving a 4 wheel drive down the driveway or parking at the top of the driveway, arrival at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway is well worth the adventure. As you are aware the Lazy Bowen Hideaway is the upper / main floor of the Duplex with the Lazy B Waterfront Suite is the self contained ground floor vacation rental. We are proud to say that the sound abatement was improved and highly upgraded in 2012. It is excellent!! Although for all guests comfort and enjoyment we do ask our guests to quiet down between 10 pm and 9 am as even though some are on vacation they are still early to bed early to rise guests. Our guests always have the option to reserve the whole house to avoid the Quiet Time requests.

Lazy Bowen Hideaway was better than advertised. The home itself and all of the upgrades are top notch. The kitchen is well equipped. The bedding was very comfortable. Views unsurpassable. We took leisurely walks around Kilarney Lake, explored the itrails at Cape Bowen and took part of the trail up mount Gardiner. This is the perfect spot to unwind, relax and enjoy beautiful views. We ate lunch in "The Cove" right off the ferry, but shopped in Vancouver for groceries for our other meals. The grocery in Snug Cove is fine for incidentals, but I would reommend shopping at a full service grocery before coming over on the ferry. Why eat at a restaurant when you have these views at Lazy Bowen Hideaway? I do not recommend trying to come without a 4 wheel drive car that enables you to get down Cleator Road. We had considered trying to make our trip without a car and were SO glad we did not do that. People in Snug Cove are very friendly and helpful. We didn't know that the ferry ticket we purchased in Horseshoe Bay was a round trip ticket and that return trips do not need to be scheduled..first come, first serve. The townees informed us very nicely without making us feel silly.
Owner Response: We are so glad that we undersold and over delivered on the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. The views are spectacular and our newly renovated kitchen is ideal for creating all your meals in the home.......no need to dine out. We agree, buying the bulk of your groceries before arriving on Bowen is a GREAT idea. Our Welcome Guide includes the address of the Safeway while in route to the ferry. Good point, the ferry fare is round trip which makes it affordable and convenient too. Ask about purchasing the Experience Card which gives you 40% off of your rate.

I cannot say more than other reviews. This place was amazing and I am sure to return. Jan is right, you certainly need a 4 wheel drive to negotiate the road down. The water was great to swim in off the dock at the bottom of the hill. 70 degrees! Everything about this place is first class. The views to die for. No restaurants for us, could not leave this place as nothing could be better!
Owner Response: We are so happy that you loved cooking in. That is exactly what we envisioned when we renovated the kitchen….A COOKS KITCHEN. We added lots of counter space for prepping and serving. We love the addition of a micro-convection oven giving the kitchen 2 convection ovens when needed. Adding the dishwasher is a bonus too ~ who wants to hand wash dishes on vacation? We are hoping that it is a water saver too. We hope you made use of the BBQ and the outdoor dining just off of the kitchen as well…..all with the beautiful sea views. Thank you for mentioning the All-Wheel Drive Vehicle Required driveway / access road. Guests often think we “can’t be serious” and as you know, it is REQUIRED. Parking is available at the top of the road and our guests can make the 5 minute walk down to the house. Or, we do offer the “Cleator Road Shuttle” service for $40 to assist with your luggage and groceries at arrival and departure. We have solutions!!! As you know, once you enter the Lazy Bowen Hideaway you will be relaxing in a gorgeous home with spectacular views. Thank you for appreciating our home and its comforts.

What an amazing stay we had in this piece of paradise! The panoramic views and charming decor at the Lazy Bowen cottage made our stay most memorable! Thanks Jan for sharing your lovely place! We are already planning to return :)
Owner Response: Neezar, it was our pleasure to share our special waterfront home with you and your partner. it is wonderful to hear that the panoramic waterfront views are still the focal point of the cottage but we are also very proud of our comfortable and charming furnishings as well as our newly renovated and completely convenient kitchen. We look forward to your return. Best to you, Jan.
This waterfront cottage was everything we were looking for, private, extrememly comfortable, spotlessly clean, fully equipped and very thoughtfully decorated. We had the pleasure of being the first to enjoy the fabulous new modern kitchen that had just been installed, lucky us ! The cottages setting is peaceful and serene with glorious unobstructed water and sunrise / sunset views. The friendly closeby village has everything you would need from great coffee, organic produce , to yoga studios and art galleries. Killarney lake also close by is a relaxing hike through the rainforest with the beautiful lake just 2km in. We look forward to definitely returning and exploring more of the island, it was exactly what we needed to recoup and relax from our hectic city lives.
Owner Response: We were thrilled to share our newly renovated cottage with you and your daughter. Our new bright and well lit kitchen with modern conveniences such as the dishwasher will truly help to make everyone's getaway a "vacation." You were the perfect Bowen Island guest as you discovered the quaintness of Snug Cove and its healthy offerings along with the refreshing and scenic hike around Killarney Lake........my favorite 4k / 1 hour hike. This lovely, seasoned and homey cottage was as welcoming and comfortable as we had hoped from the description and photos. The view was typically gorgeous west coast scenery and we appreciated the light show of the full moon over the water on our second night. We found it to be the quintessential vacation home, well stocked to meet every need; extremely comfortable furnishings; lots of books; some modern technological touches; and the patina of life. Blessed with a week of very warm and dry weather, we put the decks to good use, but we also managed three days of hikes, a swim in the sea off the dock, bird watching, and an afternoon of kayaking. There's a lovely 9-hole golf course on the island - but we'd left the clubs at home this time. The small commercial centre of Snug Cove was very convenient, a 10 minute drive from the cottage, and it provided all necessities, and places for coffee and a dinner and a breakfast out for us. While the access road to the cottage was steep and we did not own an all-wheel drive vehicle, these two active seniors found the five minute walk up to the road was not a deterrant. The description of the road condition and advice on its use was accurate and helpful. We only live an hour and a half away, but in an urban setting that seems a different world, and our goal of spending a week reading, relaxing, and re-connecting was well met in this lovely setting.
Owner Response: What a lovely way to describe your stay. It seems that you experienced Bowen at its very best. There is nothing better than relaxing on the decks, listening to the waves, and sounds of nature. We are replacing our 37 year old decks this fall with new cedar boards and slim see through railings. We hope to have you return to enjoy this improvement. As a professional interior designer comfort is always my goal. We wish for our guests to want to return because they have enjoyed our casual, stylish, and comfortable home………..it sounds as though we achieved our goal. We hope we can entice you to make the hour ½ drive to our home again soon.

The Lazy Bowen Hideaway is a truly unique getaway property - represented accurately on all counts by its owner on VRBO. The owner is very communicative, prompt, helpful and personable. She clearly has "rental property" down to a science with the most specific arrival directions and information packet for the cottage that outlines all the details well ahead of your arrival, so that you are well prepared! Perched on a hillside, above the bay adjacent to the harbor of Snug Cove, Bowen Island, the cottage is absolutely waterfront. The weather was suitable for windows-open during our stay, and we both commented upon leaving Lazy B that we missed the sound of the waves, the boats, ferry horn, and the very territorial heron that makes the shore his home. While the Lazy B Hideaway does have some strict "rules" for managing recyclables and water usage, the guidelines are actually quite thoughtful, and not at all unrealistic when on vacation. (Actually made us consider these things in our next two overnight accommodations and upon getting home.) Bedding was very comfortable. The property was clean, and tidy with a lovely, comfortable aesthetic. Amenities were plentiful including deck chairs, table for dining outside (and indoors), ample cozy seating, warm throw blankets and binoculars (multiple) for viewing all kinds of wildlife and the comings and goings of locals. Ceiling fans, and space fans for circulation (though we didn't need them). Well-stocked kitchen with all the basics (oil, vinegar, coffee, and even some cheese and turkey left from the previous visitors). Always a nice touch to have some semblance of a normal pantry when renting a home. We loved the Lazy B and would absolutely return. Downtown Bowen Island is charming and there are a couple of fun restaurants to choose from - Ferry logistics were easy enough to manage and we only had to wait on one passage in the AM when commuters were coming and going from Horseshoe Bay. Our only regret is now that the owner plans to renovate, we'll likely not be able to afford the luxurious upgrades we know she has in store! It will be fabulous, though, we are sure!
Owner Response: Thank you so much Elizabeth, for your most complimentary review. It sounds like a 5 star review to me. We sure hope you will be able to return another time to enjoy our renovations. We believe that replacing our 36 year old kitchen will add a lot of value to our guests’ getaway. The new kitchen with stainless appliances, granite counters, and new cabinetry will make for a more efficient cook’s kitchen while enjoying the spectacular view. Our goal was to achieve more counter space and a much better flow in the kitchen with our new layout. In addition we are replacing the over 36 year old decking with new deck boards all at the same height as the living room and adding nearly invisible railings. All these improvements will cost our guests a bit more but only + $60 for a weekend’s stay. Do remember, all of our returning guests always receive a discount for coming again. For all our guests……book your December 2014 or 2015 dates before October 14 2014 to receive the Pre-Renovation rates.

My wife and I had an amazing time on Bowen Island!! The house we stayed in (Lazy Bowen Hideaway) was beautiful and well maintained. Perfect setup for any couple or family wanting to get away to a remote place with beautiful scenery and friendly people. The house was only a short drive away from everything you would want or need while on the island. The Kilarney Lake, Mt Gardner and the Snug Cove just to mention a few. I would recommend going for a drive and hiking any trails you come across, absolutely amazing. Stop down in the cove to have some Tea with Pierce at the Snug Cove Coffee House, they were great. Then have at least one night out dining, at Miksa, great food and drinks. When you have some more time, go to the pier and rent a Kayak from Brent, he is great and will tell you all about the island and set you up on a great adventure to see the island from the water.

The Lazy Bowen Hideaway was the perfect getaway for us! We are both VERY busy in our jobs and this was the ultimate in quiet, peaceful solitude. Although it rained for most of the time, a beautiful view was still there under the clouds and the sound of the rain on the roof was magical! The fireplace was a welcome treat, especially as we enjoyed reading with a glass of wine..or two! We had lunch at the Bowen Island pub on our arrival and at the Snug Cafe when we left - both places served fantastic food and the service was great! We ate in the rest of the time, the kitchen is perfectly equipped with everything we needed to prepare our meals. I would recommend this place for those of you who truly need to "get away from it all" - it felt like we miles away from the busy-ness of our lives. There are lots of hiking trails available, but because of the rain we didn't venture out much.

My daughter and I stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway for two days and two nights. The cabin was gorgeously decorated and impeccably equipped with every convenience. The beds were heavenly - so comfortable. The location of this cabin is fantastic - a quick drive from all the amenities in Snug Cove, an easy walk to the rocky beach. The fact that the road into the property, Cleator Road, is 4x4 only actually serves to make the cabin more quiet and remote than it would be if the road were drivable. The parking spot next to the mailboxes is a steep but easy walk. I loved that the owner has taken every step possible to make the cabin an environmentally friendly, sustainable place.
Owner Response: Katie, thank you so much for sharing your experience with future guests. I am so glad that you appreciated the decor. When I took possession of the cabin in 2004 I wanted to keep my Aunt Jerry's style present so as a professional designer, I worked with her existing furniture, refreshed, updated, and added new accessories and pillows. I LOVE the interest and charm of an eclectic space......there is always a story to tell. As a professional interior designer for over 36 years I take pride in the decor. Thank you so much for appreciating it. We agree, it is the challenge of the AWD driveway that keeps the Hideaway hidden and quiet. The 5 minute walk down the road is so worth the exercise. The waves breaking against the coastline ensure that you're asleep in minutes. We stayed at the Hideaway with my parents and our baby girl. It was lovely! The view is incredible, the rooms cozy and comfortable. We loved sunning ourselves on the large deck overlooking the sea. Jan provided a long email with helpful recommendations for places to eat and visit, which was so appreciated. I was so pleased that there is composting and recycling expected. It was our pleasure to water the plants with the grey water, "as the locals do it"! Our only complaint would be the mattress in the second bedroom. It is extremely uncomfortable and noisy - creaks and groans with every breath. That aside, we absolutely loved the sweet little cabin. I could go for a snooze on that extra-long Victorian couch right now!
Owner Response: It is great to know that you appreciated the cabin for its comforts…I LOVE napping on the long couch too. It is just ONE of my favorite comfort spots. Our Welcome Guide for Bowen is meant to give our guests the inside track on where to eat and what to do so they can make the most of their Bowen Island getaway. It is wonderful to know that you appreciated the “tour guide.” Bowen is a very GREEN island not only because it is a temperate rain forest but with our responsible use of our resources. Our Eagle Cliff neighbourhood reservoir is fed and sustained by the winter rain but once the spring and summer arrive we are aware that without rain the reservoir is quickly depleted. So we use our water supply consciously: shorter showers, trickling the water flow, and reusing the kitchen sink grey water when possible (especially in the dry summer months). Thank you. Our trash, recycling and organic separation is all mandated by The Municipality. For those unfamiliar with the system we do provide detailed instructions and attractive bins for trash separation. The Bowen Island Recycling Depot, the “BIRD” is staffed by all volunteers. It is the most cost efficient and responsible recycling center in all of BC. It is heartwarming to know that funds earned from recycled bottles go to non-profit organizations. The Organics are shipped to the mainland and reused as a fuel source. And for those gently used items they are easily donated to the Knick Knack Nook thrift store right next to the BIRD. INSIDER INFO ~ THE KKN IS A FANTASTIC PLACE TO TAKE THE KIDS SHOPPING for a fun “new” toy while visiting Bowen. We are sorry to hear that you found the Trailside bedroom mattress uncomfortable. It is possible that the wooden bed slats may be compromised which is a quick and easy fix. We will update you on our findings. It is our priority that our guests are comfortable so we appreciate your feedback. Your feedback gives us the opportunity to address the issue. My family and I usually only stay places that have been recommended by someone we know, because vacation days are so precious, and there's nothing worse than spending money on a place only to be disappointed upon arrival. That said, we weren't sure about what to expect from the Lazy Bowen Hideaway, especially since it met two of our challenging criteria for vacation rentals: dog and toddler- friendly (which can unfortunately exclude some of the nicer properties and only leave us with incredibly "rustic" or dingy places). Upon arrival we were amazed by the level of cleanliness and all the attention to details. There was a little hiccup with getting the key to enter the home, but the owner was very helpful and I could tell she was genuinely invested in my family having the relaxing holiday we'd planned for. When we had another less-pressing issue, the owner responded promptly again and I felt we were both welcome in her home as guests, as well as taken care of like family. Lazy Bowen Hideaway boasts not only a spectacular view, but really nice interior design that made it feel unique and so relaxing. We all found ourselves (including our 19-month-old) sleeping well and just contentedly relaxed. The only drawback I would want to prepare people for, and the owner does a good job letting potential vacationers know this, is that if you don't have a 4WD vehicle (which at the time we did not) the walk up and down Cleator road is a bit challenging if you have a lot of belongings. That said, I was 8.5 months pregnant at the time and I managed the walk up and down at least once daily. So travel light, and enjoy the quiet that such an "off-road" type location offers, even while being so close to all the amenities. Next time we are looking for a place to stay on Bowen, we'll be definitely looking to see if there's a space available at Lazy Bowen.

I arrived to The Lazy Bowen on the Friday of a long weekend with my two young children. The cottage was a rare gem in itself. It was a rustic but beautifully appointed cottage. The view was spectacular and the kids and I enjoyed walking along the beach, and even taking a dip. The dock has a wonderful slide and diving board we hope to try out next time. We were a 5-10 minute drive to Hood Pojnt at Cate's Bay beach which was a nice little trip. In the village we enjoyed the Village Baker, Snug Cafe and the Chocolate Arts spot for hot chocolate on a rain. We hiked a bit of Kilarney Lake then enjoyed the Farmer's Market and delicious fish n chips. If you're looking for an amazing weekend retreat, with or without kids this place is unbeatable. Oh, Angela's Toys was also a good spot for a rainy day.
We spent a girls' weekend at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway and had an amazing time! We cooked all our meals at the house and had everything we needed. We loved the open living room with lots of windows and seating areas. We will definitely be back again!
A group of 4 of us stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway, and as soon as we walked through the door we knew this was a great place. The decor, the furniture, the views!!! Stunning!! It was a relaxing weekend for us, so we mostly sat by the large ocean front windows and read. Bedrooms were comfortable with lots of extra bedding if needed. Kitchen was great for us to cook delicious meals. We are already talking about returning to the Lazy Bowen.
Owner Response: We are so thrilled that you enjoyed the best of the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. The waterfront view is spectacular and when it is the first “picture” one sees you know you are at a special place. Secondly, we are pleased to know that you were comfortable, relaxed, and enjoying the other amenities of the cabin. Comfortable seating, good reading light, a functional kitchen, and abundant fresh air...…..what more could you want on a relaxing getaway? We look forward to your next stay.
The cottage was so peaceful and cosy in the driving rain - we had nothing to do but watch old movies, read new books and eat the Christmas goodies we brought with us. We saw 6 seals fishing and playing together, huge flocks of birds skimming the waves, and eagles diving for fish. The husband's sanity was saved with wifi internet, so he was able to catch up with email and facebook, and the children loved watching cable TV from their warm beds (we gave up cable this year, so they saw their favourites again!) The downside was the drive down - even the dire warnings on the checkin sheet could not prepare us for the gradient, the hairpin bends and the terror of being so close to the cliff edge, and we were in a new AWD vehicle! After a couple of sleepless nights, wondering how we were going to get out again after 3 days of non stop rain, we drove the car empty, with me walking ahead to guide on corners, parked at the top and made the kids help us haul everything out by hand on our last day. The girls were very unimpressed with the toilet arrangements (putting the paper in the bin instead of down the toilet) and lack of any water pressure for showers, but we had the same in Cyprus and Greece and got used to it quickly. We had one meal out, at Doc Morgans, who do not welcome children and do not have a kid's menu - we sat in the freezing deserted lower restaurant, and didn't find the food good value. I know they do a great bbq in the summer, but not so good out of season. On the other hand, we found the best ginger and molasses cookies in the Ruddy Potato store! A lovely place for a much needed post-Christmas break.
Owner Response: Julia and family, We are so glad that you were able to enjoy the comfort of our home while viewing the surrounding wildlife show. There is an abundance of sea life, birds, and deer all around our property, it is a treat. Please tell the girls that we appreciate them following the septic rules with the toilet tissue. We understand that it is not what we are used to in the city but it is one of the adjustments we make for the operation of our comfy but remote home. Once we find an AWD septic pumper truck that will come down to our waterfront home then we will be able to revise our request. (NOTE: AS OF JULY 2012 WE NOW HAVE A 4WD SEPTIC TRUCK THAT WILL BE SERVICING OUR SEPTIC TANK ON A REGULAR BASIS. OUR PREVIOUS SPECIAL TOILET TISSUE REQUESTS ARE NO LONGER NEEDED.) Yes, the gravel road is steep in spots with those tight turns.......I remember the first time I HAD to drive down my heart was pounding, but after I went back up again it was a piece of cake.......the key is taking the corners wide. I do agree….the road does take some getting used to. Did you see our Welcome Book with our suggested restaurants? We agree with your review and don't recommend Doc's either. Next time you are back on Bowen you will have to try Miksa, there is something for everyone including the kids. If its summer, try the outdoor BBQ at Alderwood Farm & Butcher. The burgers are delicious and it’s so fun sitting at the picnic table while the chickens wander around you. Please come again…........We were happy to have provided you comfort and rest for your winter break.

This property was more beautiful and charming than the photo's depicted. The owner has taken every possible need into careful consideration, as we wanted to for nothing! The energetic 5 min. hike to and from the cottage from our parking spot was not a problem for us at all. We enjoyed hiking Mt. Gardner and the trails around Killarney Lake, and of course finishing the day off with a refreshing swim in the lake. As for shopping, we enjoyed the shops and galleries in Artisan Square as well as the most interesting second hand store behind the General Store. Sadly we kept missing the bakery which closes at 3pm. Can't wait to get back to Bowen!
Owner Response: Rick and Wendy, over the years we always ask our guests how we can make their next stay even better and apparently it has been all worthwhile. It is fine tuning the little (and big) things that help our guests enjoy their stay: sharper knives, coffee grinder, black out window coverings, down proof pillow covers, more walking space (less furniture) in the trailside bedroom, etc. We are so glad that all your needs were met. The driveway REALLY did require a four wheel drive vehicle, but we still managed to explore nearby public beaches and the little town--restaurants, shops and the marina.
Owner Response: Jeff and Jo, So glad that you enjoyed our spectacular view, our comfy cabin, and our charming island. Come back soon. Jan
We recently spent a weekend at the Lazy Bowen hideaway to attend a wedding. Because there were 7 of us, we rented both suites and it turned out perfectly. The house is so cosy and tastefully decorated, you feel like you are at home. The view off the deck of the water is fabulous. The house had everything we needed and more. Would highly recommend it.
Owner Response: Linda, we are so glad that you loved our cozy home on the water. Please come and stay with us again.......love to have you. Jan

The Petite Suite was a perfect getaway for myself, partner and toddler (followed by a couple days solo for a break), at reasonable cost. It is in a fantastic location for privacy and relaxation, and ideal for those who are traveling light/ don't want to drive/ prefer to walk, cycle, and/or take the bus from town. The view over the water is wonderful and the interior space is open, light, yet intimate. I'll be back for sure...

This was our first mini trip as a family of 4 (kid @ 2 yrs and kid @ 4 weeks). It rained off and on all weekend, but the petite suite was a great place to play games and bond! :) We watched the ferries go back and forth and had a great view of howe sound and the mountains along the sea to sky highway. We went outside and threw rocks in the water and then came back to sit by the wood stove which was really cozy!! The lane (Cleator Rd) was exciting the first time (raining and dark) but was not too bad really. I would not even think of trying it in a 2wd though. Check in with the lock box was easy, and everything was exactly as described on the website and the welcome package. It was a great getaway, close to vancouver, but it felt far away! This place (the top of cleator rd) is actually accessible by transit! From vancouver you could take a bus to horseshoe bay, then ferry to snug cove, and then a bus from snug cove to the top of cleator rd.
Owner Response: Tim, We are so happy that you were able to enjoy the environment and comfort of the Petite Suite. For over 55 years we have found that relaxing and enjoying the casual comfort of our home has always brought us back to connecting with family. it is great that you were able to create family memories too. We hope to have you as our guest again soon. Jan

Our family came up from Bainbridge Island to Bowen Island for a 2-day getaway after Christmas, and to ski and snowshoe at Cypress. What a perfect combination! Gorgeous, sunny vistas over Horseshoe Bay from Lazy Bowen, the wonderful beach house, then a scenic ferry ride over to Cypress, where the snow was perfect and panorama breathtaking. Even for those like us who are accustomed to the great beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the scenic ferry rides to and fro', this experience was a show-stopper. Visitors, pay heed to all the caveats about Cleator Road - -our Audi A-4 wagon seemed perfect as it is not too large and has AWD - - but do not let the road caveats stop you from renting this house, which has the most beautiful views imaginable, and is nicely stocked for your getaway. The property is quite rustic, but extremely comfortable and clean. Our favorite features other than the view were the fantastic fireplace ( raised hearth) and the beds, which were really comfortable and dressed in lovely linens and pillows. The one bathroom is very nice with a very good shower and tub. Also, working with the owner has been a real pleasure, and we hope to rent there again. It is wonderful in the winter, and we'll bet the summers there are even more fantastic, although the winterscape with the snow-capped mountains and lights from Cypress across the water were truly unforgettable. One more thing: the ride into town is short and scenic, so getting in to shop or enjoy the most delicious latte ever at Snug Cafe is a cinch. A+ in our book.
Owner Response: Kristen, we are thrilled that you and your family enjoyed our waterfront home on Bowen Island. Summer is our high season but you have provided the proof of how beautiful the view is in winter with the snow capped Coastal Mountains coming straight out of the water. My Lazy Bowen Hideaway blog has photos of this spectacular sight after a November storm. It is great that you took advantage of the nearness of Cypress Ski Resort for some snow fun, only an hour away from the Hideaway. And then, what is better than returning to the warmth and comfort of our waterfront cabin after a day of snow at Cypress? Thank you for sharing your December experience at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. We hope you will visit us again soon…….. (hint) spring is a colorful & special time of year too!

We have been to this wonderful retreat a few times over the last few months and everytime we feel the stress of work and the hustle and bustle of the city melt away. One step out onto the deck and you see that amazing view and you competely forget you are only 20 minutes away from the city. My husband and I travel alot and we both agree that this is one of our favorite locations and we don't have to get on a plane or travel for hours to get here. The owner of the property is amazing and so happy to do anyhing she can to accomodate your needs. If you like the outdoors there are many great hiking trails and beautiful scenery that is great for avid or novice walkers. There are lots of great little restaurants with terrific food, but we prefer to stay in and cook all the while enjoying the comfort of this home along with a million dollar view. If you are looking for tranquility, relaxation and happiness... this is the place for you.
Owner Response: As the Lazy Bowen Hideaway homeowner, it warms my heart to know we have returning guests that LOVE our beautiful spot as much as we do. Our goal is for you to create meaningful memories with your family and friends. We hope you will always remember your “Perfect” getaway. Thanks to all of our guests for their honest feedback, we have been able to fine tune the details making each return visit even better than their last. Come and visit us. “

My friends and I just returned home from Bowen Island and staying at the Lazy Bowen. All i can say is it'a an awesome place to stay!!! The views from the house are amazing!!! We intended on seeing the island ....but the next morning when the sun came up ... all 6 of us lined our chairs up in front of the deck and open the double doors and just sat there and enjoyed the view! This place is the only place i plan to stay when i return to Bowen Island!

We are now all back in Vancouver after a wonderful time at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. All worked out very well for us. Having the upper and lower units was great - with the 9 of us just coming and going and each of us doing our own thing. And then all getting together in the evening for a nice feast!!! The kitchen was wonderfully equipped - we brought our own food, and we were always able to find dishes to serve out of and even napkins!! Very nicely stocked kitchen - you have thought of just about everything. Of course the weather was amazing and jumping off the dock into the refreshing water was a treat for us all. I walked into Bowen and took in the market, then I walked up the trail to Artisan Square which I found very interesting. The Hideaway is definitely a gem. Thanks for making our family together not only a possibility bur a reality. Being able to bring the family dogs was a huge plus for all of us. We cleaned up very well after the dogs ( both outside and inside - although the weather was so perfect that they were on the decks practically the whole time) - since we would like to be able to come back again.

We stayed at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway & Petite Suite from August 6th through 9th (3 nights). We had a group of 7 -- mostly singles - attending a friend's wedding on Bowen Island. The cottage, along with the Petite Suite, was absolutely perfect for our needs. While the weather didn't cooperate (rain & drizzle for most of the weekend), it didn't stop us from having a great time! A couple of us took advantage of swimming, and well enjoyed a dinner at Tuscany - it was terrific. We also enjoyed a walk around Killarney Lake - the tall trees protected us (mostly!) from the rain & drizzle. The cottage was exactly as we expected - it was very clean, well maintained, and we didn't have any trouble finding what we needed when preparing meals for our large group. Jan was great to deal with - right down to the very detailed instructions for driving down Cleator Road to the cottage (glad I didn't have to do the driving!). I speak on behalf of my entire group, and we would whole-heartedly recommend the Lazy Bowen Hideaway as a wonderful getaway spot. Thanks Jan, for a wonderful time!

We rented both the main house and downstairs suite for our family vacation. It worked out perfectly. Lots of time for the grandparents to sit on the deck, relaxing and reading. The rest of the family paddled our kayaks around the bay, went swimming and hiking. Delightful in every way.

Our stay at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway was amazing. Even though it was a quick trip for us to get there, it truly felt like we were a million miles away. For those of us who have forgotten how to relax this is the place to go to remember. Relaxed, content and happy are the three words I would use to describe our stay. We are already making plans to go back!

Just a one night get-away, turned into 2 nights as I couldn't get myself to leave. Jan's house is warm and welcoming, and immaculately clean. Huge waterfront deck, with waves crashing you to sleep. So nice! I'll be back. This place is a jem. :) Oh, and just a 1 minutes stroll to get down to the beach.

Spent a long weekend with my family at the Lazy Bowen. First day we got there, we knew it was going to be a memorable stay. The waterfront views were amazing. We loved the wraparound decks, the floor-to-ceiling windows, the large kitchen, and that the house was close to the beach. Jan's place also had board games, puzzles, novels to read, DVDs you can watch, a BBQ grill, even a telescope, and a lot more things to help you enjoy your stay. If it wasn't raining the first night we got there, some of us probably would have stayed outside on the deck all night. Wish we could have stayed longer in this hideaway. :)

Jan supplied us with all the information we could possibly need to make our stay hassle free. Accommodation and location superb but do remember you must have a 4WD car as the drive is steep. I rented both properties for myself and friends which worked really well. Thank you Jan and hopefully will return.

A fabulous way to ring in the New Year -- from the coziness of this beautiful hideaway. Fireplace crackling. Watching the view change with the weather. Tracking the ferries. Beautiful family meals in a great kitchen. Robust walks. and a lovely little town nearby. The driveway is not for the faint hearted -- so Jan's insistence about needing 4WD is good advice. Jan takes great care of this wonderful spot and ensures it is kept up to provide a comfortable stay for her guests. Would love to come back to experience the place in a different season.

This house was beyond expectations. We had our extended family of eight people staying both upstairs and down and the home provided the perfect space for us to have our family gathering. The upstairs open concept kitchen, dining room, and living room fit us all for meals and hangouts. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped with everything you need. You can tell that folks actually live in this home and cook regularly. The views over the water are mesmerizing. I could sit on the deck in the sun for hours. Also, as a person who enjoys design and architecture- I was struck by how well built the house is. The foundation, metal railings, covered porches, were so well designed and built. The whole place is just a solid beautiful home.

There was a storm on our first night, and it was a great spot for storm watching. The house was sparkling clean. Definitely recommended!
